Understanding the Results

The result shows the additional water your cat needs to drink each day, besides the moisture they get from their food.

The general guideline for a cat's water intake is about 60 milliliters (ml) of water per kilogram (kg) of body weight per day.

Formula: Water to Drink = Cat’s Weight (kg) × 60ml/kg − (Water from Dry Food + Water from Wet Food)

Remember, this is an estimate. Monitor your cat’s water intake and adjust as needed.

Example Calculation:

Suppose a cat weighs 5 kg, eats 50 grams of dry food with 10% moisture, and 100 grams of wet food with 80% moisture. Here's how the calculator would calculate your cat's remaining daily water requirement:

1. Required Daily Water Intake:
5kg×60ml/kg=300ml

2. Water Provided by Dry Food:
50g×(10÷100)=5ml

3. Water Provided by Wet Food:
100g×(80÷100)=80ml

4. Total Water to Drink per Day:
300ml−(5ml+80ml)=215ml

Why Proper Hydration is Important

Hydration is essential for your cat's kidney function, overall health, and preventing urinary tract diseases.

According to veterinary studies, adequate hydration can reduce the risk of chronic kidney disease, a common ailment in cats.

Tips for Ensuring Adequate Hydration

  • Keep fresh water available at all times.
  • Consider using cat water fountains, as they encourage more drinking through running water.
  • Monitor your cat's water intake, especially if they primarily eat dry food.

When to Consult a Veterinarian

If you notice significant changes in your cat's drinking habits or any signs of dehydration (e.g., lethargy, dry gums, decreased skin elasticity), consult your veterinarian.
